Remember summer?

I was sorting through my old images tonight and I found this one. I cropped it to get rid of some of the unwanted stuff around it.

Roll on summer 2007.

A Portrait

I got talking with this chap on the beach about his sport. Was happy enough to have his picture taken with his buggy. The yellow in the distant kite was pure coincidence.

Looking for the shot.

Taken last weekend at Camber Sands. Taken with the B&W setting in camera with an added couple of tweaks in PS2.

Erm, mmm, not sure, maybe!

Maybe a little surreal, maybe artistic, strange definitely. John will think it is over processed.

Come on lads, lets go that way!

Desperately trying to get some images from the Saturday trip that were not washed out and lifeless and noticed this. I really like it, it's fun and the blast of contrast makes it look like late evening on a loverly day. When actually it was a cold, windy and the light the colour of dishwater.

And from the Sky ...

“I, with my own hands, stretched out the heavens and caused all their host to shine...” Isaiah 45:12. Mmm oh well all I can say is it was a long day at Kimmerage anyway. One of the little gems you find going through old photos. (As per request photo fixed and changed)

New Monthly Challenge

Having not had the time to submit my second monthly challenge picture I thought it pertinent to set this months challenge. Time.

Wikipedia states that: "There are two distinct views on the meaning of time. One view is that time is part of the fundamental structure of the universe, a dimension in which events occur in sequence, and time itself is something that can be measured. This is the realist's view, to which Sir Isaac Newton subscribed."

It is my personal feeling that this has sufficient scope for real exploration. Time can be spent, wasted, lost, made, and adjusted.

Avoidance of clocks, watches is advised as this would be too easy for creative photographers.

The deadline for this months challenge will be the 23rd April 2007.

Self Portrait (Second Attempt)

Not my best effort but I thought it was a little different. Learning to use CS2 in the process. what do you think ... Deadline for second entry is today!

To Lee or not to Lee

I've been looking at my range of Cokin P filters recently and some are getting a little bit ropey now with a few scratches etc...

I'm considering whether to move systems altogether to Lee Filters or replace the badly abused ones.

What are your views? Will quality be noticable over Cokin. I know durability is also an issue with Lee Filters being glass (and you all know how careful I am)

Thoughts appreciated.

Self Portrait - first attempt

My first attempt - tried something different - and this is the result after about 50 different shots and a bit of post-processing

Lewis - Firework Girl

After trawling through my old photos I found this one. It is my first attempt at some manipulation so I'm not sure if what I have done will stand up to scrutiny. Worth a try though.

Back to Camber Sands

Another relatively deserted day on Camber sands. It was very windy and the sand was blowing all over the place. My lens's have a new crunchy feel while focusing now. Need to do some camera cleaning. A variaton on last weeks posts from Camber Sands.

My turn for something different...

...before I start on the 'self portrait' I thought I had better put something on here since I'm getting badly outnumbered on the posting side!

I took this in a bar in Kuala Lumpur - quite a bit of the structure had been constructed out of bottles so some pretty interesting light going on.

Back to nature

Something a little more in common with previous post :)

(I promise no Kingfshers)

I took this image of the deer on the 100-400 IS USM in Richmond Park.

And now for something completely different.

First post of a mixed weekend of photography. We went to Fishworks in Chiswick this afternoon to get something for the tea. We bought some wild madagascan tiger prawns. I got them home and couldn't resist making a few pictures.

Sorry to Simone who waited patiently for me to set up flashes and all manner of compositions until I got one that I thought looked OK.

Solitude

Another shot taken over the weekend. I like the solitude, most of the images of the kite buggies were close ups. With this one I decided on a different approach.

I know I said the last image was the last one for today. This is really the last one.

Dungeness Beach Part 4

Final post for today as dinner is ready and I'm tired having been up since 5am. Something a little abstract, one of the fishermans huts. I liked this hut as the colours were really vivid. I couldn't make up my mind as to whether to shoot the whole hut or a piece of detail from it. At the time I was hoping that the boat you can see through this window would be more noticeable but I could'nt get the right exposure. I hindsight I should have taken two images exposed from foreground and one from background and merged them. Anyway.... .

I decided in the latter and used ISO2oo 16mm f/5.0 and 1/50 sec. Posted by John

Dungeness Beach Part 3

Another image of one of the Dungeness fishing fleet. Taken in B&W as before but this time I have used the Velvia Vision Photoshop Plugin to tone the the resulting image.

Self Portrait - Attempt 1

"And today I'll be mostly wearing Comme De Carcons"

This is my first attempt at this months challenge "Self Portrait" I used the 10-20 Sigma EX to shoot this picture at 10mm ISO100 f/5.0 and 1/125 sec. I wanted to add some extra to the self portrait and the nuclear power station was perfect. Typical with the 10mm end of this lens, the Cokin P-Filter (circ-pol) caught the corners. I kept them in and enhanced them with the vignetting in Adobe Lightroom as they've given the scene a tunnel effect. I used the cameras timer before you suggest that Simone was involved. Simone was safely tucked up in the car with the Sunday papers and a warm cuppa.

Sunday Afternoon Walk

A mono conversion taken from on top of the dunes at Camber sands. I used the same technique used in earlier posts by using the in-camera B&W mode and a few tweaks in Adobe Lightroom.

ISO 100 11mm F/5.6 1/4oo sec.

Fine Art Print?

I'd love to know whether you think this is a printer or not. Camber Sands is well known for it's sand dunes and I took the opportunity to take a few shots. I liked this one best as the fence adds both interest and a lead in line.

Thoughts appreciated.

Mary Celeste?

This one really caught my eye. We were walking past this beachside cafe and I spotted this scene. What happened here? Was it the food quality? Was it the Cafe's ambience that offended? The owners of the food and the full cup were nowhere to be seen.

It might be worth reading the sign ;)

Dungeness Beach Part 2

Following on from the beach/fishing theme. I was wondering about how best to take this one. I eventually found the most striking image I could get was lying on my back underneath the boat with my head pointing towards the stern. The 10-20 mm f2.8 Sigma does a great job of upsetting the sky, an effect that I really like.

I think this one is crying out for a bit of cross processing. What do you think?

Dungeness Beach Part 1

There's nothing like a nuclear power station for providing a level of eeriness to a landscape. We moved about 15 miles further on from Camber to Dungeness which hosts an active nuclear power station. The whole area is littered with the cast-offs of old Military activity as well as the small beach fishing fleet which still uses Dungeness.

I shot this using the B&W parameter set with in-camera contrast and saturation boosted to 3/4. This is one of the old fisherman's huts which unbelievably provide shelter and storage. This is a relatively good example, most fall apart and rot away in situ.

I like the ladder casually placed against the wall of the hut, the boat in the distance hints at the cabins purpose.

Things get more weird.

I saw this wall and thought it would be the perfect backdrop for something quirky. This part of Sussex (Camber) harks back to the golden age of the typical British seaside holiday. Nothing has changed much except most people now jet off to warmer climes. The whole area has is well worn and faded, partly due to the elements, partly due to years of neglect. This makes for a fascinating place to take pictures.

Enough rambling, I have a few shots of this wall with kids, dogs and seagulls featuring. Photography (to me) is all about waiting for that perfect moment and for me this was it.

First Post From A Surreal Day Out

Firstly, Sunday morning 6am and we're in the car to try to make it to the Kent coastline for sunrise. A minor miscalculation of sun rising time. Nevertheless, this morning was fairly foggy, clearing but still a bit misty. We passed this view on the way just outside Newick on the A272. I couldn't resist taking a couple of snaps.

ok, so maybe not quite the 'antique' effect on display here. I thought the neon glow looked fantastic, and this was the best of the bunch I took.

Waiting for a bus?

Another one I like but this one I'm not sure why. Taken with the camera at my side walking through a crowd. Any comments?

The Spice of Life Indeed

I'm quite enjoying people pics for a change. This one was fun because of the two old ladies laughing outside the pub. I couldn't keep them cropped and still keep the title on the building so had to settle for this. But the other people (including John on the right) makes it a fun pic. The lights are a little burned out, so will need dodging a little when I can :)

HD Central

OK so it's closer to my heart than the others but hey, come summer I'm over there. The lights on the bake that are a bit washed out in colour, in B&W, make the bikes look fab.

Distracted?

Bar Italia is always a great people watching place. Shot this image discretely from the hip. The guy on the left seems somewhat distracted..

Taken on ISO1600 f3.5 at 28mm, converted to B&W with some additional grain and a little boost to contrast and highlights.

The Apple Market Of Olde London Town

My first post from last nights trip to Gordons, ahem I mean photo taking session.

Following on with the sepia toned look, I think this image quite suits the effect as well.

Posted by John

So which way is Gordon's then?

Another grainy picture from the london evening trip. I rather like this effect of using high ISO. Glad I didn't carry my tripod around london eh. I like the way the lines all follow the angles and frames the back. The sign post stops at the top of the building too :).

Modern Olds

Sometimes an image is not quite right unless it is in Black and White. Having spent an evening in London we have a load of images that are silky and grainy from sky high ISO settings so it is an ideal collection. Looking at picture from the 40s-50s you would only see them in b&w but also the fashions and accesories give the era away. With this one whole scene screams modern but the imagry is old. It tells a little story, I like it, what do you think?

Another sunset

A little more colourful this time. I really wish I had a tripod though - it could be a little sharper, but I'm pretty pleased with the result.

Taken on Canon 28-135mm f/9 @ 1/4 second.

Lifesaving Equipment

This is an image I took a couple of years back at Southwold on Sea. Very hot sunny day and I was out and about with the Bronica ETRSi and Velvia 50. I liked the combination of the flotation ring and the lifeguards. Which ones are the lifesavers?

I scanned it from a 120 slide and boosted it in CS2 to achieve the cross processed effect.

One for JPG magazine?

Thoughts appreciated.

Kuching Sunset

This is the first of a few decent sunset shots I managed whilst on holiday in Borneo - didn't have my tripod so balanced the camera on a handrail and hoped for some good results. I think this one is not a bad effort.
